2011 Illinois School Report Card

Test scores, class sizes, district finances and more.

Each year, the Illinois State Board of Education releases "report cards," detailed analyses of the performance of public schools and school districts in Illinois, in accordance with state and federal law. The reports are available on a state-funded web site and also as raw data. Except where otherwise noted, data on this site is derived from the raw 2011 report card data.

News application developers Alex Bordens, Brian Boyer, and Joe Germuska built this application with members of the Chicago Tribune education team: Susan Keaton, Tara Malone and Diane Rado.

Rangel International Affairs Program 2012 graduate fellowships

Please share this announcement with individuals who may be interested in the Rangel Graduate Fellowship. More information is available at www.rangelprogram.org.

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program is now accepting applications for its 2012 graduate fellowships. The Rangel Program seeks applicants who are interested in promoting positive change in the world as Foreign Service Officers for the U.S. Department of State. The fellowship is open to undergraduate seniors and graduates who want to begin two-year master’s programs in the fall of 2012.

In March 2012, the program will select twenty Rangel Fellows who will receive up to $90,000 in benefits over two years to fund tuition, mandatory fees, and living expenses for completion of two-year master’s degrees. These benefits include two summer internships, one on Capitol Hill and one overseas at a U.S. embassy, in additional to professional development activities and mentoring. Awardees may use the fellowship to fund graduate studies of international affairs or a related subject such as public administration, business administration or public policy at U.S. universities. Those who successfully complete the program will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers upon graduation, embarking on one of the most exciting and rewarding careers.

Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship, plans to enter graduate school in fall 2012, and a minimum 3.2 GPA. The program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need. The application deadline is January 20, 2012. Additional information about the Rangel Program and specific application requirements are available at www.rangelprogram.org.

The Rangel Program is managed by the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center at Howard University and funded by the U.S. Department of State. It seeks to promote excellence and diversity in the U.S. Foreign Service.

Record Lost in Detention Documentary PBS)

Frontline correspondent and The Futuro Media Group’s President, Maria Hinojosa takes a penetrating look at President Obama’s vastly expanded immigration net, explores the controversial Secure Communities enforcement program and goes inside the hidden world of immigration detention in Lost in Detention, airing Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at 9 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings).

More than one million immigrants have been deported since Obama took office. Under his administration, deportations and detentions have reached record levels. The administration has promised to make the detention system more humane, and more selectively target the most serious criminals. But it faces Republican critics who urge stricter measures — and a growing backlash among Latino voters, a key 2012 electoral force.

In a co-production with the Investigative Reporting Workshop, correspondent Hinojosa tracks the enforcement sweep from the neighborhoods of Illinois to the expansive Willacy Detention Center in south Texas. During a yearlong investigation, Frontline and Hinojosa uncovered a troubling picture of abuse inside immigration detention facilities, as well as alleged cases of beatings, racism and management cover-ups.

This is a “must watch” report that goes to the heart of the immigration debate and to the heart of why The Futuro Media Group and the public media vision and leadership of Hinojosa is needed today more than ever before.

Don’t miss this seminal report on immigration detention on Tuesday, October 18, and please pass this email on to others who may be interested in this important issue.

"College Diversity Nears Its Last Stand"

By ADAM LIPTAK

Adam Liptak is the Supreme Court correspondent for The New York Times.

Washington

ABIGAIL FISHER, a white student, says she was denied admission to the University of Texas because of her race. She sued in Federal District Court in Austin, causing Judge Sam Sparks to spend time trying to make sense of a 2003 Supreme Court decision allowing racial preferences in higher education. “I’ve read it till I’m blue in the face,” Judge Sparks said in an early hearing in Ms. Fisher’s lawsuit. But the meaning of the central concept in the decision — “this esoteric critical mass of diversity of students,” he called it — kept eluding him.

The 2003 Supreme Court decision he was trying to understand, Grutter v. Bollinger, had elevated the concept of “diversity” from human-resource department jargon to constitutional stature. The pursuit of diversity, a five-justice majority said, allows admissions personnel at public universities to do what the Constitution ordinarily forbids government officials to do — to sort people by race.
