AP’s stylebook is regarded as the standard for language and
usage, and it’s just decreed
that it “no longer sanctions the term 'illegal immigrant' or the use of
'illegal' to describe a person.” Rather, “illegal” should be used only to
characterize an action -- like living in a country illegally -- instead of the
person taking that action.
