Net Migration from Mexico Falls to Zero----and Perhaps Less
The largest wave of immigration in history from a single country to the United States has come to a standstill. After four decades that brought 12 million current immigrants----more than half of whom came illegally----the net migration flow from Mexico to the United States has stopped----and may have reversed, according to a new analysis by the Pew Hispanic Center of multiple government data sets from both countries.

The standstill appears to be the result of many factors, including the weakened U.S. job and housing construction markets, heightened border enforcement, a rise in deportations, the growing dangers associated with illegal border crossings, the long-term decline in Mexico's birth rates and changing economic conditions in Mexico.

The report, "Net Migration from Mexico Falls to Zero----and Perhaps Less," authored by Jeffrey Passel, Senior Demographer, Pew Hispanic Center, D'Vera Cohn, Senior Writer, Pew Hispanic Center, and Ana Gonzalez-Barrera, Research Associate, Pew Hispanic Center, is available at the Pew Hispanic Center's website, www.pewhispanic.org.

The Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, is a nonpartisan, non-advocacy research organization based in Washington, D.C. and is funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

ENLACE FELLOWS PROGRAM

Higher Education Leadership For a Global Society

Master of Arts Educational Leadership in Higher Education
Application Deadline:  July 16, 2012

APPLICATION for Class of 2013 - 2014 (Cohort 6)
THE ENLACE FELLOWS PROGRAM Northeastern Illinois University's ENLACE Fellows: Higher Education Leadership for a Global Society mission is to invest in the preparation and representation of a generation of Latino leadership in higher education that will create transformative change responsive to the educational challenges of an increasing U.S. Latino community; a community that is positioned to share in bringing change in an American society with global perspectives. The underrepresentation of Latinos in graduate programs is a leading factor that contributes to the critical shortage of Latino tenured faculty and senior administrators at colleges and universities across the nation. It is anticipated that through their unique professional and practical preparation, the ENLACE Fellows will significantly improve the educational status of Latinos in the region, United States and in a global society.

OBJECTIVE The ENLACE Fellows initiative will select 10-15 bilingual/bicultural (Spanish/English) individuals for enrollment in the Master of Arts in Educational Leadership (Higher Education sequence) every two years. The selected candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing or maintaining careers in higher education and the development of leadership for the Latino community through education and civic engagement. Candidates should be individuals interested in working in higher education institutions and with work or volunteer experience in education or not-for-profit associations/organizations whose mission engages them in educational programs that address high school and college issues. The ENLACE Fellows will influence institutional policies and practices that affect the enrollment and achievement of Latinos from K-20. The initiative operates from the basic concept -- one individual who is well prepared for leadership positions will influence and impact many.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE • Cohort 6 begins January 2013
• Two-year program (3 semesters each year)
• Enrolled for two courses each semester
• Classes held Tuesday evenings, the first at 4:15pm and the second at 7:05pm
• Monthly mandatory professional development seminars (one Saturday a month) and participation at professional conferences. Seminars will help strengthen the Fellows’ academic preparation and transfer their experiences to the workplace and the community.

PROGRAM COST & COMMITMENTS
The program will cover tuition and professional development seminar materials. The selected Fellows will be responsible for a $30 Student-at-Large NEIU application for admissions fee, mandatory fees each semester, textbooks, and the cost for the required ten-day International Study Visit (after fundraising and/or grant support).
